Breast cancer – why it’s so important to know your disease

What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is a disease caused by the abnormal growth of cells in the body. These begin to take shape in the breasts, eventually forming a large lump or mass of tissue called a breast tumor.

Breast cancer is the world’s most commonly-diagnosed cancer and the second most common cancer in Cambodia.

Why is a breast exam important?
Regular examinations, or screenings, can reveal early signs and symptoms of any abnormalities. Early detection makes for increased chances of treatment, recovery and ultimately saves lives.

At what age should you screen for breast cancer?
Breast self-examinations or medical screenings should be performed from the age of 20 onwards.

When should breast examinations be conducted?

Breast self-examinations at age 20 and older
Medical exams by a doctor every three years for people aged 20 to 40 and every year for people over 40
Breast X-rays every two years for people aged 40 to 49 and every year for people aged 50 and above
Women with a family history of breast cancer should start screenings 5 years before the earliest age of diagnosis in the family. In principle, a mammogram (x-ray picture of the breast) should be done from age 35-39.
